Group Captain Sue McGready

Please tell us who you are and what you do.

My name is Group Captain Sue McGready, I’m a logistics officer in the Air Force. Logistics Officers in the Air Force look after a really broad range of activities, from purchasing, to loading aircraft, looking after catering and feeding the troops, transport and distribution, warehousing, buying the new aircraft that we’re in the process of buying at the moment, and providing all the through-life support for them in spares and fuel and tyres and everything else.

What attracted you to the Air Force?

I have lots of family members who are in the Air Force, most of them were Airmen, I was the first one out of the family to be an officer. My uncle was a loadmaster on C-130s in Vietnam, my brother had joined about seven years before me as a security policeman, and so I had exposure to the Air Force and what lifestyle it was and what it was about. I then started to look at what my natural vocational tendencies were and I was looking at doing accounting or a business degree at university because I enjoyed that kind of work, and when I looked into the Air Force they offered me a position as a Supply Officer, as it was back then, at the Australian Defence Force Academy in it’s second year of operation. So, went through all the interviews and processes and started at ADFA in January of 1987.
